Women's Golf Shirts - An Evolution

Everyone knows that golf was started as a men’s only sport - well that simply isn’t true nowadays! With so many women only tournaments, there’s not only room for women in golf, we’re making it our own!

But that doesn’t mean there’s not a male-heavy past to reckon with.

Golf started as a “gentleman’s sport” and over the years has evolved into golf as we know it. It still wasn’t until 1895 - almost 200 years after the first golf club opened in England - that the first US Women’s Amateur was held in New York, the first of its kind in the US, but not the last!

1895 fashion was, let’s say different, to the performance golf attire we see today on women.

Miss Isette Pearson pictured above was founder of the Ladies Golf Union in the UK and developer of universal handicap system

By the 1900s, women started to wear the same caps as men, and as soon as showing your ankles became acceptable, up went the golfer’s hemlines! I'm sure this solved a lot of laundry problems!

Joyce Wethered (above) won the British Ladies Amateur Championship four times in 1922, 1924, 1925 and 1929 and the English Ladies' champion five years in a row between 1920–24. A true pioneer of golf fashion for women - just check out those pockets!

Speaking of pioneers - Miss Gloria Minoprio (above Courtesy of Getty Images). This self taught golfer caused quite the commotion when she strolled onto the course wearing slacks in 1933. The first time a woman wore trousers on the golf course and it changed the game for everyone.

As World War 2 eclipsed the economy and left it’s mark on it, women were in and out of work and that left a hole in golf - pun intended.

By the time the 60s arrived, you better believe dresses were back.

We have short skirts and cinched waistlines with a collar to match the men. Bold colors arrived on the course in the 60s and floral patterns dominated. Femininity was big in the 60s following WW2 and the baby boom putting women squarely back at home. But that didn’t mean pants went anywhere. Apart from shorter hems on women’s dresses and skirts, women started wearing free-flowing tunics and culottes to golf.

If the disco era of the 70s taught us anything, it was that bright, feminine color never goes out of style. Pants suits were in, and so was unisex golf apparel. Golf dresses were a rarity and polyester tops and pants made their way onto the course.

Three words - High. Waisted. Pants.

Thank you, 80s! If shoulder pads and big hair weren’t enough, the 80s brought us the classic golf look for women - polo shirts and high waisted pants with sleek belts.

Crikey! Khaki’s are making a splash in the 90s! Back to basics and away from bright, bold colors of the previous years. The 90s were all about function over form, meaning we even get the first glimpse of golf shorts for women in oversized polos.

The 2000’s bubblegum pop phase bled into golf fashion, and we’re back on those sweet, feminine colors. The golf dress came back - but not in it’s original form - this time, with a skort, shorter sleeves for maneuverability, and with moisture wicking fabrics, like polyester. This lifted the whole game for women, allowing them to focus on performance. Visors even started appearing on the course!

It’s hard to believe we’re already out of the 2010’s but we’re here and we can confidently say that the 2010s were all about altheisure. No other decade in history has seen this combination of comfort, style, and athleticism in one outfit. Women wanted clothing that could move from work to play to the 19th hole, and they got it. Stretch fabrics with pockets and subtle collars and shapes won in the 10s - now onto the 20s!

Women’s Golf Shirt Etiquette

In 2021, golf shirts are evolving every day, but they’re always in alignment with the formal golf dress code. The only requirement for women’s golf shirts is that they have a collar! There aren’t any special requirements about length or tucked in or out, or even color (thank goodness!) All you need is a shirt with a collar that’s clean and ready to win you a golf game.

Some other things to consider when looking for a golf shirt:

Moisture Wicking

Moisture-wicking is when a fabric actively pulls moisture away from the skin.

Moisture-wicking fabrics have the ability to actively and effectively pull your body’s moisture away from your skin. These fabrics are constructed to transport the moisture through capillary action. Capillary action is when water is drawn upward from the skin towards the surface of the fabric, keeping you cool and dry when you start to sweat.

UPF50

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. The UPF indicates how much UV radiation a fabric will allow to reach your skin. UPF is for fabrics what SPF is for sunscreen, so you know exactly how protected your skin is every game.

Some features of UPF 50 fabrics are:

  • Fine Gauge Knits. Garments with fine gauge knits prevent harmful rays from passing through to your skin. The fine gauge knit fabric also makes it impossible for the sun protection to wash out.
  • UV Fabrics. Fabrics like polyester and nylon innately do an excellent job at disrupting UV light.
  • Thumb Holes. Unexpected, but thumb holes allow the UV shirt to cover the entire back of your hand while you’re on the course or the courts!

The good news is that Jofit's UV Tops are all UPF 50! So you don’t have to worry about UPF when you’re wearing Jofit.
